As Iran Deal Made, Long Looks Forward to Review
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Billy Long released the following statement after negotiators announced a deal with Iran regarding its nuclear program.
“After more than 19 months and a number of unenforced deadlines, the U.S. and other western nations have finally struck a deal with Iran on its nuclear program. I now look forward to reviewing the agreement over the next 60 days as part of the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act and also taking a vote on the deal. Congress now has the opportunity to have the final say and ensure America and our allies’ security is not at risk. Based on the framework agreement, I am concerned this agreement will only temporarily halt Iran’s ability to enrich weapons-grade uranium while permanently lifting sanctions that have held Iran’s nuclear capabilities at bay. That only delays Iran’s potential rather than ending it. Iranian leaders have continued to signal rejecting random inspections of military sites, and there is no mention of drawing down missile capabilities. In the end, Iran is one of the largest state sponsors of terrorism with Hezbollah and a clear mortal enemy of our friend, Israel. Sanctions must be strengthened until a real deal is made. I will not accept a dangerous, bad deal that jeopardizes Americans over no deal at all.”
