Congressman Billy Long (MO-07) issued the following statement today regarding the death of Dictator Fidel Castro.
“With the death of Fidel Castro, I will not take this time to mourn a man who for years prohibited free speech, free press and executed and jailed many who spoke out against him,” said Rep. Long. “The president was right when he said the Cuban people have a ‘friend and partner in the United States.’ But that friend and partner won’t be one that continues to turn their head to a country that oppresses its people. The United States will be a friend and partner who calls on the Cuban government to allow free speech, free press and free and fair elections. The Cuban people deserve a chance to live in a democracy and all the freedoms that come with that. They have been denied all of those things too long.”
