Long Supports Efforts to Reduce Federal Role in Education

U.S. Rep. Billy Long today voted in support of the Student Success Act, legislation which reforms our nation’s education system by returning more power to parents and restoring local control.  

“Education begins with active, engaged parents long before students are enrolled in school.  We know that being prepared to learn is as important as the process of learning itself.  I support empowering our educators and parents who know best how to give children the proper tools they need to succeed.  Today the House took a strong step away from a one-size fits all approach by empowering parental choice and reducing the federal government’s role in education,” Long said. 

The Student Success Act among its many reforms protects state and local autonomy by prohibiting the Secretary of Education from imposing conditions which act to coerce the implementation of national curriculum standards, consolidates more than 70 existing education programs to lessen Washington’s role in education, collapses funding into a streamlined Local Academic Flexible Grant program to provide funding to states and school districts to support local priorities that improve student achievement, and repeals the federal Highly Qualified Teacher requirements, which allows states and school districts to locally develop and implement teacher evaluation systems that measure an educator’s influence on student learning.
