Long Casts Pro-Life Vote on Anti-Abortion Bill

U.S. Representative Billy Long released the following statement following Wednesday’s House passage of the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.

“Today is a victory for the pro-life cause and our ongoing battle against abortion.  As Americans, it is our duty to provide ample opportunity for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  Abortion is an ugly approach to rob the prospect of life from the innocent and block liberty before the chance is even given.  I am proud to cast my vote in favor of protecting the unborn.  I will continue anti-abortion efforts on behalf of Missouri’s Seventh District, which has widely expressed staunch opposition to the practice.”

The measure passed the House Wednesday, 242-184, and would prohibit abortions to be performed on a life more than 20 weeks past conception.  Exceptions would be granted should the mother’s life be endangered or if a pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.  Abortion providers would be required to make sure a woman seeking an abortion has received medical attention or counseling independent of abortion services at least 48 hours beforehand.

Long is also the author and lead sponsor of the Adoption Promotion Act, which would mandate Title X-funded pregnancy options counseling include adoption counseling, require family planning services to include access to information on the adoption process and provide ways for providers to report data to ensure women are receiving the most effective counseling possible for their child.
